thedaver > Strike Valley - looking south from Strike Valley Overlook. This peculiar feature of Capital Reef runs paralell to the the inclined layers of Capital Reef. Just on the other side of the central ridge down in the valley is Notom Road.
thedaver > Looking north along Strike Valley. The "reef" is to the left. In the foreground is a typical rock cairn whose job it is to mark the way.
thedaver > Taken along Burr Trail Road. Near the center of the photo is Peek-a-boo arch. Peeking just over the ridge on the right are the Henry Mountains. The massive rock of Navajo Sandstone to the left of Peek-a-boo is called a Hogback, I believe. At the foot of the Hogback and Peek-a-boo, leading north (left) is the 4WD road leading to Upper Muley Twist trail.
thedaver > More rock cairns leading the way. When hiking (in a Nation Park, anyway), it is bad form to construct your own cairns. Cairns are the responsibility of the Park Rangers.
thedaver > Rock cairn on the way to Strike Valley Overlook.
thedaver > The feature to the left of the cliffs is called The Castle. The trail, which snaked up and down and around the inclines of the reef, culminated at a jumble of rocks called the Navajo Knobs. The Knobs can be seen along the ridgeline in the right-side distance. They are the smallest looking set of rocks along the ridge (although they are actually higher than the other, nearer crests).
thedaver > Another look at The Castle and Navajo Knobs. The Knobs are in front of the last cloud to the right.
thedaver > Navajo Knobs, looking south along the spine of the Waterpocket Fold/Capital Reef. A person has to scramble a bit to reach this perch, but the view is well worth the effort. What you CAN'T see is the wind...blowing about 30 mph on this day. The Henry Mountains off in the distance.
thedaver > The lower feature behind me is called The Fluted Wall. It looks more dramatic in person, trust me.
